WHY I'M RUNNING
The first thing people seem to want to know is, 'You have a great career. Why would a perfectly good doctor want to serve as a legislator?'
It is precisely because I have a good career that I feel drawn to run for office. I would not be a successful surgeon and teacher today if it weren't for the excellent education I received from our public schools. I feel compelled to help make sure other young people who come from a disadvantaged background, such as mine, have the same opportunities to excel as I was given.
In addition, I have always seen my job as community service. My colleagues and I stand ready, 24-hours a day to care for the injured. We work nights, weekends, holidays. It is a service of which I am very proud.
I see running for office as a different way for me to serve my community. I've learned a great deal during my medical training, my military career and my time as a trauma surgeon. It is my hope that my experience will help me to articulate ideas and debate with colleagues to find the best solutions for Arizona.
